Fuchunjiang River

Location: Tonglu, Zhejiang

Transportation: Bus from Hangzhou

Culture/History Rating: 1/5

Scenery Rating: 3/5

Hotels: N/A

Summary: Tonglu is actually a little nice town to spend a night in. It's not crowding and some local little restaurants are really nice and cheap. The river flows through the town, and people use it for all purposes. Fish here is fresh and cheap too. There are many 'boats' docks along the river bank at night. It feels pretty good to walk along the bank at night.

Description:

The Fuchun River is tributary of Qiantangjiang River , the largest watercouse of Zhejiang Province. Along the Fuchun River are to be found scenes of exquisite beauty, of which Tongjun Mountain (the Mountain of Old Man Tong). Yan Ziling's Fishing Platform and the Yalin Wonderland stand out as three complementary highlights, combining to form a rare attraction. Where the Fuchun flows past the town of Tonglu, the water of the river is so limpid that the pebbles at the bottom are all clearly visible. Where the river converges with the Tianmu stream a magnificent peak rises precipitously, that of Tongjun Mountain. At the top is to be found Tongjun Temple in which stands a statue of Old Man Tong. What a delight it is to stop by at a tea pavilion nearby and take a few refreshing sips while feasting one's eyes on the view that streches below.

Sailing against the current, the boat reaches the Seven-li Rapids. With the completion of a massive dam in the Fuchun Hydroelectric Station, the perilous shoals and unruly torrents of former times have been converted into a man-made lake. Going further up the river and cutting through the silken ripples for another fifteen minutes, the tourist boat reaches a site of historical interest: Yan Ziling's Fishing Platform, which consists of two huge rocks projecting steeply out of the water. It is said that, during the Eastern Han dynasty (25-220 AD) when Yan Ziling was too proud to accept an official post from the Emperor, it was at this spot that he sought a refuge in the mountains.

A breath-taking cliff, where the Ziling's fishing Platform was once situated The Yaolin Wonderland, a massive cavern wrought by Nature, is the most enticing of all these sights. The numerous stalactite formations in a myriad likenesses make the Wonderland a kaleidoscope of color, while the silver spray of the waterfalls, typical of a karst landscape, add life to an otherwise silently inanimate world. Multi-colored stalactite formations in the Yaolin Wonderland. Such are the three scenic highlights of Fuchun, attractions of different kinds, yet perfectly harmonious in the conjunction of their setting along the river.
